Division IV (Ages 19-22)

Plants, earth and water are the most palpable environmental elements portrayed in my design. Earth representing the basic foundation of plants, is required as a medium of life and growth. In the human context, the earth symbolise society. The plant as a human figure symbolises the youths of today. Next is water, a basic source of growth. Water symbolises hope, education and action, basic needs for youths to grow and survive in modern day society. This environmental issue is important to me because climate change is real and yet youths like Greta Thunberg are silenced for voicing out our concern for our shared future. In my painting, despite harsh and seemingly unsuitable condition to grow, a seedling still manages to splurge out from the cracks of earth. Similarly, youths are faced with modern issues such as Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, and natural disaster yet youths must fight to grow and survive in this harsh society. The principle of design used are emphasis, balance, and harmony. The girl serves as the focal point as it is the painting's most significant figure while giving a sense of depth and space. The balance and harmony is achieved through similarities of plant elements. Colour, as one of the design elements, portrays two different moods sadness and hopeful. Darker tones of colours are used to portray sadness whilst lighter tones used on the girl symbolizes hope for the future. 'Tears from the Future' will let the viewers understand that it is time for the youths to be heard and to be given acknowledgement towards the world's issues. It is a calling for action and awareness towards the dangers of climate change because a world without the youth is like the earth with no seedlings to grow and was left with nothing but the dying trees.
