Division III (Ages 14-18)

My digital painting features a single sprout and a weeping deer. To me, the quote ‘Plant the Seed’ is a symbol of how incredibly precious and valuable nature is, and I chose to portray that through my painting. I think our ecosystem is something that everyone should consider to be important as we are all heavily dependent on it. Healthy environments provide us with food, clean our water and air, maintain the quality of our soil, and control the climate. To help get my message through to the audience, I intentionally altered different aspects of my artwork to affect how they are viewed. For example, the sky in the background is very dark and saturated. It’s fiery colours along with the ashy clouds are supposed to remind the audience of global warming, pollution and the negative impacts we will face if we don’t take care of the Earth. The crying deer that is reaching towards the sprout is a symbol of all the animals and life that are currently being affected by global warming. And finally, the sprout represents hope for change. I used techniques to make it appear almost as if it’s glowing in contrast with the dark background. However, things will only get better if action is taken. My wish is that those who see my painting will be encouraged to help care for the environment, and keep in mind the importance it has in all of our lives.
