My artwork, ‘Disposable Fashion’, depicts the unsustainability of the fast fashion phenomenon through the mass-production of cheap clothing. I aim to plant awareness about the destructive reality behind recognized and popular fashion brands around the world, as I feel it often goes unnoticed by consumers. The environmental impact of the fashion industry is important for me to share because I feel that many young adults like me -- who are targets of fast fashion brands -- blindly contribute to the nature of disposable fashion. Since fast fashion brands produce clothing based on catwalk trends and are constantly trying to adapt to the latest fashion, it lures consumers into buying clothes that are only temporary. In my artwork, the background of a fashion magazine represents how fast fashion brands get their inspiration and remake similar styles. The sewing machine displays numerous shopping bags and speech bubbles that entice consumers, as a symbol of popular fast fashion brands. Finally, the pool of fabrics below the sewing machine represents the abundance of waste that comes from fast fashion. I used a variety of my old/unused fashionable pieces such as masks, headbands, clothing, and jewelry in the fabric collage to show that the waste of fast fashion not only comes from clothes but a wider scale of fashion. As my artwork openly illustrates fast fashion brands and the collection of fashion pieces as waste, I hope the viewer grasps a new perspective of the fashion industry and their consciousness as a consumer. I hope my artwork prompts viewers to reflect on which brands they choose to shop at and to lower their fashion footprint for the better of our environment.
