Division III (Ages 14-18)

My work shows hands cupping dirt with a little tree sapling, then on the bottom left corner is a hill covered with Evergreen Trees, untouched by any humans. On the bottom right corner, is that same hill, but with a bunch of houses and only one tree remaining. This drawing doesn’t just symbolize deforestation, it symbolizes the idea that more trees are being destroyed than being planted, which has been one of the main causes for climate change on this planet. Also, many habitats have been destroyed because of deforestation and therefore animals are being moved around and not living in a stable environment anymore. The hands cupping the dirt exemplify the power we have as humans to make a change to our dear planet, even if it’s a small positive contribution because it can go a long way and help our planet. The issue is important to me because I live in an area with lots of open space, but if drive more east, you see a bunch of huge housing developments being built because lots of people are moving to that area and that shows deforestation because lots of forest is being cut down to build these houses and it also destroys habitats that were in those former forests. I used colored pencils to show the effects of deforestation. I see this entry affecting lots of people because it can cause people to buy these huge swaths of land and conserve it instead of building more houses and have the trees and habitats for animals in the local area.
