My work relates to the theme “Plant the Seed” as it shows how coming together is the first step to a healthier environment. We are the seed. Change is not a spontaneous combustion, it must be ignited in order to bloom and has to be continuously fueled to survive. I see the people of the world as the flint and steel, we have the power to spark change and sustain it. This piece is about my identity and how the environment is part of my identity. There is a self-portrait in the center of the piece, surrounded by foliage, flowers, and bees. I am half Peruvian and half British, so I included the national flower of Peru, the sacred flower of the Incas or Cantua buxifolia, and bees, a symbol of Manchester, England. According to Incan legends, this flower is a symbol of unity and hope, as it was born after a war between the sons of two kings ended. The bees symbolize unity as they represent the hive mentality of the people of Manchester during the Industrial Revolution. The bee population around the world is dwindling at an alarming rate, I wanted to raise this issue to people by making an image that shows what we will lose if we lose these keystone species. If we can come together again for the environment, I believe we can have a sustainable revolution. . The hands are intertwined and one with the plants and lending a helping hand to the bees that sustain them. Each hand holds a flower in different stages of its life cycle, showing that healing the environment will take time and patience. I hope that people see themselves in my painting and will take action to start their own virtuous cycle for the environment.
