Division III (Ages 14-18)

In my artwork, I illustrated six environmental elements: litter collection, community garden, recycling, pollinator garden, marine pollution, and planting trees. I chose these topics because they are simple ways to engage people in environmental and sustainability conversations. One of the biggest challenges that prevents others from involvement with environmental activism is the belief that small steps do not help. I show a young girl thinking of all the ways she can make an impact on the environment. Simply encouraging others to think about the environment can inspire them to be a part of the change necessary to protect the environment. I hope that the piece influences the viewer to consider implementing small changes that can help our environment, even if it is as simple as daily recycling instead of throwing items into the trash, or donating clothes to others instead of throwing them out. To communicate my message, I used the artistic elements of space, line, color, texture, and value. I used lines to divide up the six concepts, and an equal amount of space to show that each concept is equally important. I used bolder lines around the subject to draw attention to the front. I used color by using a grayscale with little value for each of the concepts to make them appear simple, proving that each action and topic are easy to contribute to. The alternating shades of blue and green were used to represent our earth. I applied a softer texture to create a welcoming and gentle atmosphere, which will invite the audience to look at the piece longer and consider what they can do, planting the seed of change in minds.
