Division III (Ages 14-18)

My piece figuratively relates to the theme Plant the Seed through the symbolism of the octopus on the lady. Pictured in my work is an octopus covering almost all of a woman's head. The octopus symbolizes a thought in the woman's mind about marine wildlife conservation. As many thoughts are, this octopus was planted into this woman's mind through awareness on the topic of marine conservation. This is also how I see my piece affecting those who view it, as my goal with my work is to plant the thought or seed of marine conservation awareness into the viewer's own mind. Another reason that the woman and the octopus are intertwined in my work is to represent how our ocean's directly relate to all our lives. The ocean provides the rest of the world with oxygen and food, but this is not simply because of the water. It is the ecosystems within the ocean that bring so much importance into the world as a whole. I chose to make my piece in ink and watercolor to show how two contrasting elements can work together to make something good. Ink is hard, abrasive and permanent, this represents humanity. Everything we do has lasting marks and effects on our world. The watercolor on the other hand is softer looking, and is directly affected by every and all factors around it; this represents the ocean. Through these two different types of mediums I wanted to show that co-existence is possible. Coexistence between nature and humanity is possible if we are careful and precise with our marks on the earth.
