As the flames engulf Australia, koalas are cornered with no way out. Marine life suffers from microplastics in every ocean. Common threats from mankind control the weaker portion of the biosphere, bypassing all rules set by nature. Without doing something soon, we will continue to see our world be consumed by the epidemic of mankind. We take conservation efforts to slow down the effects we’ve caused, but despite our greatest efforts, fires still start, plastic pollutes the planet, and waters rise as glaciers shrink. National icons like Smokey Bear help to spread awareness about the harm we cause—specifically to our natural forests. While the poster of Smokey in the artwork catches your eye due to its contradicting tones, it’s impossible to not notice the forest fire as it blazes in the background. As much as we try to cover the disasters, they’ll keep spreading and won’t stop no matter how ignored they are. The conservation poster provides irony to the piece, giving an eye-opening view of the real world as it really is. The mother koala holds tightly to her baby, unknowing of the future. Much like us, wanting to protect the things we love, while the only weapon we wield is that of hope. I hope that this artwork will show the viewers the catastrophe of our reality―planting a seed in their mind and letting it grow as they see other artwork exposing the environment. I attempted to make the picture look as realistic as possible, so at first glance, it could almost be perceived as a photograph. Using alcohol markers with a small combination of colored pencils, I was able to get a photorealistic look; which helped to emphasize the reality of the images within the picture.
