Division III (Ages 14-18)

While in the pursuit of personal fulfillment, humans have lost sight of their origins and disregarded the waning health of Earth’s sanctuary. With the rising concerns of climate change, the piece warns of a future where humans have become yet another species faded into oblivion, returning to the soil from where they came. The fantastical fish represents the myriad of unknown discoveries of sentient beings; the holes in its fin create an image of fragility in its form, conveying an urgency for this generation to act immediately. The creature is an amalgamation of the living beings that suffer from habitat loss due to climate change, which heralds a bleak future for humankind if no action is taken. The sculpture of the woman, representing humanity’s presence on Earth, is deliberately colored the hue of the ocean that covers most of the planet. Multiple red corruptions have spread into its crevices and planes, illustrating the damage we have inflicted on ourselves and other species during our reign. Multiple limbs have eroded away, and paired with the singular closed eye, the statue foretells the imminent state we are advancing towards. And yet, the vines continue to support and preserve what is left of the sculpture; nature has continuously provided life with the resources necessary to survive, and in due time we must repay that of which the Earth has granted us, and cleanse the corruption we have caused. With this piece, I hope to communicate the dualities of climate change and the consequences it threatens, and I wish to plant the seeds of empathy into the viewers. After all, if we remain passive, we may lose our right to a future.
