2020 - Division II (Grades 4-8)

This piece is referenced from the massive brush fire engulfing Australia at the moment. This cause is very important to be as I have been an animal lover for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, my favorite show were the ones about animals and their habitats. Australia has always been my favorite to learn about. I adore the animals and the beautiful geography, and I have wanted to go there for the longest time. Naturally, when I heard about these fires killing millions of animals and destroying the homes of humans and animals, I knew I had to do something, even if all I could do was bring awareness to the issue. This relates to the theme because Australia is part of the earth, a part of our home and that home is being destroyed, forests and houses are being burned down, smoke is spreading, and lives are being lost. The trees, the animals, and the land are all a part of our home, they need to be protected. For the artistic elements, I used many bright colors to try to replicate the real life situation accurately. I used emphasis on the tree and koala in the foreground to bring attention to the animals as well as the land that is affected by the brushfire. I know that this has been a popular topic throughout the news and internet as of lately, but many who have heard about it have done nothing to help, or are unsure how to do so. I hope that those who view this entry will feel inspired to assist in any way they can, whether that be donating to Australia's fire departments and rescue organization or spreading awareness even if that just means spreading the word to a few others.
