2020 - Division III (Grades 9-12)

In my work “Shared Treasure,” I tried to emphasize the unity and interdependence between the animals and people of our planet, and the destruction that results when the equilibrium is disrupted. Whether this may be due to human activity such as deforestation or pollution, there is no doubt that all animals and all people share the burden of our actions equally. Through various science classes, I’ve come to realize just how delicate Earth’s numerous ecosystems are; one disturbance of a resource or animal can have a dramatic cascade effect on its populations. I’ve come to realize just how interconnected animals and people are. the conservation of our earth really is a group effort; a beautiful harmony impossible without the voices of every living being. In my piece, I depicted the Earth as as small light source, being watched over by various members of its ecosystems: humans, elephants, fish, birds, etc. I tried to create a contrast of shadow and light that emphasized the importance and value of our green planet. When people see this piece, I hope that they realize that Earth is everybody’s home, is everybody’s responsibility, and is a treasure belonging to and guarded by all that inhabit it.
