2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

The trees on this planet in which supply oxygen to humans and are the lungs of Earth, are under siege by the effects of climate change. Wildfires are one of the threatening forces amplified due to global warming. Although low intensity fires are beneficial to maintaining balance in forests by removing the dead underbrush, the scale of annihilation they've escalated to recently is unlike anything foreseen on Earth. The burning releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, attributing to the most significant culprit of climate change; carbon emissions. A sustainable future with clean air is at risk if ashes of debris are the remains of lush green forests. In this gouache painting, I aimed to depict Earth’s struggle to breathe through a relationship tied to society. The representation of trees as Earth's lungs, an organ, puts the planet's health in perspective for humans. By symbolizing Earth’s lungs on fire I intended to invoke a dire sense of urgency in my viewers. It's essential to conserve this natural resource and protect it from the hands of society’s misuse such as deforestation. For the rise of wildfires are evident to wipe out the remainder of what's left.
