2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

This painting comments on the disposal and accumulation of single use plastic into oceans and other waterbodies and the threat is poses to marine life The painting shows the plastics that accumulate under the surface of these water bodies and places them beside the marine life found there The two human figures in the painting express common perspectives on the issue The first figure with the eyes closed portrays the ignorance and underlying scepticism commonly expressed towards environmental issues The second figure expresses awareness regarding the issue however takes on a very passive approach displaying a missing sense of urgency and a misplaced desire to solve the problem Some of the marine life in the painting are seen to be coming apart by forming fragments displaying the damage these animals are pronged to The marine life coming apart create a sense of urgency by expressing the visually expressing the damage they are undergoing at present The black splatter at the corner of the painting suggests the sense of impending destruction associated with the issue This environmental issue is important to me as I am fascinated by marine life and the increasing and alarming plastic disposal into oceans is appalling to me The attitudes expressed by the two human figures in the midst of the visible plastic pollution and the fragmenting marine life is the major cause for discomfort for the viewer and prompts them to change their perspective towards environmental issues However alongside the problem of single use plastic the painting displays the natural beauty of marine life and these water bodies in order to show the viewers what is to be lost as a result of the issue
