2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

Inspired by the theme, No Time to Waste, I wanted my work to showcase the issue of human destruction on the environment, especially plastic pollution in nature. White silhouettes of grocery bags and other miscellaneous objects are traveling the current of hair, other tinier cuts of white are shown, and there is even a net tugging at the end of the leaves. This issue is important to me because while the topic of plastic bags has been covered extensively and still hasn’t been wholly diminished, there is also the issue of micro-plastics in our waters. Our own clothes contribute countless amounts of micro-plastics, visually represented by the smaller white pieces, not to mention the amount of water wasted making many apparel. I wanted to communicate this message through the media, by cut ups and re-used various pieces of old letters and photos, as to assure as little waste as possible going into making the piece, as well. Artistically, I wanted the figures face and hair to be blended into, almost a part, of the natural surrounding. I wanted anyone who views this to understand the beauty of our oceans and wildlife from the visuals, as well as to ask themselves why we are ruining the very thing we are a part of.
