Division III (Ages 14-18)

A seed has been planted in me as I learned that we have been given the resources to cultivate a stunning environment, but we choose to use those materials to tear the plant down to benefit our present selves. I learned that I have been ignorant about the ways that I contribute to the current environmental issues through the choices I make. To represent this dilemma, I drew the human girl to portray people like myself. She is receiving a seed from “Mother Nature”, who symbolizes our planet, and the girl has to decide how to use that seed. The seed represents the decisions we make daily that affect our planet. Does she plant the seed and contribute to a better future, or utilize the seed to create a convenient present? I wanted to showcase two different future realities in this piece by developing a high contrast between the two sides. One side displays a natural utopia, while the other consists of air pollution, water pollution, deforestation, and a lack of biodiversity. I choose to include these environmental issues because I believe they will yield the most consequences, and they are the issues that I contribute to the most. I chose to use colored pencils to share my message because they allow me to further develop a contrast between the emotions of either side, which makes the piece more impactful on the audience. The element of symmetry allowed me to show that the worlds were the same, but each with different circumstances. I hope that the audience will see this piece and consider what “seed” they have been given and the impact of their decisions. When faced with the choice between convenience and sustainability, remember this piece and consider that the fate of our planet is decided by you.
