Division III (Ages 14-18)

This piece is called 'A Jewel's Rebirth' because tropical forests are called 'Jewels of the Earth'. The seeds are therefore represented by literal jewels. The rainforest inspiring this painting is the Daintree Rainforest, Australia. It's part of the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest in the world. Within the rainforest, we'll find a lot of biodiversities. It's also home to several endangered species. It's also very helpful to the nitrogen cycle, which we need for clean air, thus for the wellbeing of our planet, yet it's being threatened by habitat destruction, dryland salinity, etc. I consider the conservancy of this rainforest important because it's being overlooked. I worked with watercolors and added pastels, markers, gouache, and colored pencils on top. The piece is divided into 2: the luscious rainforest, and the barren wasteland. The contrast between the two is heavily accented, mainly by the color palette and by the amount of detail. The wasteland is a monocultural field. The chopped trees are evenly distributed. A wildfire in the background warns us. A Syzygium maraca sprout is the focal point of this painting. She's completely white to symbolize purity and hope. She calls out to us: We must preserve the native plants and revegetate the area. But most important of all, cease all human development within the rainforest. There are no animals to be seen, because, unlike plants, animals that are gone, are gone forever. Hopefully, I'm able to draw attention to these issues and also to the beauty that Tropical Rainforests contain. Most importantly, I hope people will realize that action needs to be taken NOW. Here are some organizations we should support: Daintree River Revegetation Project, W.T. Com, The Australian Rainforest Foundation, The Forest Trust, The rainforest alliance, Conservation International (CI), and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF).
