Division III (Ages 14-18)

My painting themed on the industrial affection upon pollution of marine environment, which has always been a hot topic as we consider an increasing numerous amount of species are suffering from extinctions due to human activities. Therefore, I named my painting 'Murder’--a fish which is killed mercilessly by contamination reflects the irreversible damage to our marine system. My audiences should be initially attracted by the fish body right at the middle, where I intend to arise public realisation on our crimes and huge negative influences towards our mother ecosystem. This fish softly splits the whole picture into upper and lower parts that are conjugated mutually as a reflective parallel image of the other side of the world. Thus my painting can be appreciated and placed in portrait with either side up. This implies that the problem can never be rolled around to escape. The chimneys and smog on the upper half renders its side gray, and the ocean on the bottom half sets a high contrast between reddish, blackish and bluish paints. As a mirrored image, the coral columns and reefs pair with chimneys and smokes respectively. Therefore, the fish becomes a mirror and a bridge where the decomposing blood that is extruded out by industrial activities spreads into the sea. The spread of blood reminds us that the death of a fish on my painting is just a warning sign, and the adversity will finally touch every specie including us humans. The alarm is set for us to take our actions ASAP.
