In Singapore, where there are limited land resources, there is not much land to grow crops. Almost all food is imported from other countries. However, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, any imports of food might stop incoming. The nation might face food scarcity if that is the case. So, the government has started encouraging the people living in HDB flats (the building in the background of my drawing) to grow edible vegetables in the corridors outside their homes or on the balconies inside their homes, I think it is important for us to do so, so that Singapore will be able to diversify food sources and greenify our living environment. My artwork depicts vegetation on the corridors. The neighbourhood cat in my artwork is carrying a bag of seeds. Three “seedlings” are following it, so that they can progenate and bring more joy to the community. I chose yellow and rainbow for the background (which is the facade of the HDB flat) because I think urban farming brings hope to everyone. Other than providing food, it can beautify our living environment and combat global warming. If everyone chooses to embrace the concept of indoor farming, we will be able to achieve food sustainability in the near future. I hope people will see this in my painting and be inspired to start their home gardens and “plant the seed”, even if they live in high-rise homes.
