Division III (Ages 14-18)

Last summer was devastating. Without air conditioning, my house turned into a giant heat sack, and warm, stale air rushed into my lungs even as I tried to hide from the heat. The little fans only circulated thick, sticky air around the house, and it felt like a never-ending drown. The heatwave of 2021 had big and small impacts on the world. The insurance information institute states that due to the heatwave, the threat of wildfires appeared a month ahead of schedule, and more cases happened compared to the previous year. The wildfires destroyed thousands of shelters for both humans and wildlife and the dreams and hopes of the younger generation. The fear of constant destruction and climate change the next generation has to live in discourages the youth and takes away their dreams. But rather than being discouraged and helpless, I believe that it’s time for us to plant the seed. From each new seed planted, a new life is born. And for each new life growing from a seed, a new dream is dreamt. I created my artwork digitally through procreate. By using opposite colors, blue& orange and green& red, I highlighted the growing plague of the wildfire that disrupts the environment. Through the intersection between the little girl, school sign, and wildfire in the background, I wanted to convey the message of hope despite destruction and devastation. The little girl represents the future generation as well as the dreams of each individual youth. The source of light she faces shows hope, and her motion of wiping off the dirt and ashes on her face shows her determination to move forward. Although she may face obstacles in her life, if she plants dreams in herself, there will be a hopeful future for her to live.
