Spreading knowledge is one way to plant the seed for changing the environment. My work, the Tree of Knowledge, relates back to the Plant the Seed theme in that it illustrates how learning about the different environmental problems affecting us today can uncover solutions. By learning more about these problems, such as acid rain, habitat destruction, and the growing hole in the ozone layer, the tree of knowledge sprouts, inspiring the reader to learn more about the environment and find ways to help it. These issues are important to me because I believe that the more we know about the problem, the more we can do to fix it. This watercolor painting uses metaphors and symbolism to communicate its message. The tree symbolizes growing and becoming wiser as you gain more knowledge, and the fruits, representing the fruits of our labor, is a metaphor for the solutions that can come about as a result of education. The watercolor paints used gives the painting a smooth effect, which makes it feel more natural, and the mountain in the background gives the painting more of a scenic feel. I chose the brightest colors, specifically for the fruit, to show the appeal and give the audience hope for fixing the problem of climate change. I hope that viewers of this piece will walk away knowing the importance of spreading awareness in facilitating a better future for our planet.
