The subject of my piece is a tiger, as they are considered an endangered species. For decades, tigers have been poached and hunted for their pelts. Deforestation has caused the eradication of their natural habitats, forcing them into smaller and smaller areas. Even though there are many organizations working to rehabilitate and stop the decline of these beautiful creatures, today merely 3,900 tigers remain in the wild. While I have many favorite animals, tigers have always had a special place in my heart because of their stunning, unique colors, impressive size and power, as well as their cultural significance. I created my piece with watercolor, because unlike most large cats, tigers have an affinity for water. The water surrounding the tiger is also to symbolize the future revitalization of these creatures in the wild. To relate to the theme “Plant The Seed” and continue the tiger motif, I added tiger lilies. Like the water, they are also to signify the species’ prosperity and growth. When people see my artwork, I want them to feel the power of the tiger as it bursts through the water. I want them to see the beauty of such an animal, and in doing so feel a desire to protect it from extinction.
