Division III (Ages 14-18)

Through the use of natural materials and processes, this photography piece explores change, preservation, and the inability to grow, in my life and society as a whole. Ice as a material represents the notion of a frozen segment of time. It’s stillness and movement through melting allowed me to dive into ideas surrounding the growth of relationships and work with the fundamental concept of transformation. The more I handled the ice, the more of it I lost, creating a temporary relationship which is reflective of all life. While my process is self-reflective, my photography also examines global issues, such as the environmental crisis. As the materials themselves contain a variety of symbolism and complexity, I aimed to provide an individual experience and connection for each viewer while intertwining pressing global issues. My art connects to the theme of “Plant the Seed” not only through material choice and my artistic process, but also through examining important topics of growth, new beginnings, and changing our actions through inward reflection. Growth and preservation are important themes to me, and protecting the planet is crucial for the beautiful variety of wildlife to survive and our future as a species. Through the process of creating this photograph, my art piece continuously changed and was physically damaged by me, a process that is highly reflective of our treatment to the environment and is directly connected to the climate crisis. My hope is to bring awareness to the importance of environmental preservation and protection, and inspire viewers to reflect inward and grow as people to help save the environment and change for the future.
