I feel that the most important environmental issue is droughts because they can negatively impact animals, plants, land, as well as humans. Drought can lead to poor quality drinking water and a loss of habitats for animals, cause land to erode and dry, and damage the productivity of the impact areas. Because of the associated decrease in agricultural productivity, humans can experience economic loss, food shortage, even famine. More importantly, dry land means higher chances of wildfires occurring, which can lead to further costs for both the government and society. With the increased frequency and intensity of recent wildfires in California and British Columbia, droughts can be of great concern. The main idea of my piece combines planting an actual seed with planting the seed of action. As drought takes over the hand emerging from the ground, the other hand reaches out to give life through both the plants themselves and the action of reaching out. I was inspired by the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement’s use of a hand to communicate their message so I used a similar design involving hands to communicate taking action to Plant the Seed. I hope that when people see my entry, they take action to help, not only to alleviate and prevent droughts, but also to reach out to those around them to overcome other environmental challenges.
