Division III (Ages 14-18)

I think Plant the Seed is symbolic of planting bits of hope in the present so that the future can brilliantly shine. The flower atones to peace and unity found in the center of the mandala plate, which represents a solution to division- governments forming alliances to protect the environment and heal it instead of harming it. Every day I am bombarded with images of coral bleaching and increased ocean acidity across numerous media platforms. Entire aquatic ecosystems are deteriorating before my eyes because of climate change. Humans on earth are intertwined with the aquatic ecosystem, and at the rate sea-animal homes are decimated, even human habitats have started to plunder. The hands of the people of the world must come together and discover a solution to end climate change and defend our homes. The base of the kiln-fired ceramic piece is a thick plate that represents human consumption because of the heavy and unshakable grip greed has on society. The greed that consumes humans has no bounds and endlessly devours. Human greed has manufactured transportation for leisure, releasing carbon emissions and propelling the rate of climate change. The turtle surrounded by clay bubbles shows what will be taken first by climate change- animal ecosystems, and soon, our peace and unity. I hope viewers of this entry realize that although people on earth are not yet liquefied or are submerged in melted glaciers, there will come a time when climate change completely wrecks communities across the globe. Realize that it is up to humans to lower carbon dioxide emissions and protect our families and friends because we are the ones that kick-started carbon dioxide emissions, so we can cure it. If the earth ends by climate change, we can die knowing we tried our best and gave it our all.
