Division III (Ages 14-18)

Since the start of the agricultural revolution, mankind had been exploiting the resources given by the natural world without mercy. As human civilization progresses, lands started to become irritated by the overwhelming demands of our never-ending searches for scarce resources. While seed is normally considered as the symbol of hope and new life, I tried to use my work to portray the opposite representation of seed: mankind planting the seed of destruction into our planet Earth. In my creation of this installation, I used materials that people in everyday life would use excessively without conscious, including tissue plastic and light bulb. These elements are used to warn audience of the massive amount of resources we are exploiting without noticing. The root extending from the figure symbolizes human extracting everything useful for them from nature, the dried pine needles, but leaving only trash and thus destruction in return to the nature. The developing matters in the seemingly pregnant belly of the man is the “seed” I am trying to show in this installation, which is the bad seed humans are planting into the earth. Issues related to environmental problems are espicially under my concern because I have been working with cleaning up the beach weekly for three years. I saw all sort of household wastes being dumped into the ocean, and died fishes lying on the beach with their stomachs full with indigestible garbage produced by human. I would like the viewer to see how human wastefulness is bringing destructions to the world, and to bring more awareness to environmental issues.
