Coral reefs are one of Earth’s most beautiful creations, but there is more than what meets the eye. These vibrant animals support thousands of marine life, and have an impact on us as well. Unfortunately, they are currently undergoing a silent death. Over 50 percent of our ocean’s reefs have been lost in the past few years, and it has a cause: climate change. Rising sea temperatures stemming from human activity cause the reefs to become stressed, leaving them susceptible to diseases and death. My painting shows a diver in a coral reef that no longer contains life. He is holding up a past photo of the once beautiful, and lively reef. My deep love and connection for the ocean has given me the desire to protect it. I hope this inspires others to make a change in their everyday habits, and to call upon our governments to recognize the scientific data that shows that climate change is real, and it affects everything around us. The devastating effects of climate change are playing out right in front of us, but there is still hope for a better world.
