2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

At first sight, my artwork, “Nature’s Vessel”, illustrates beautiful blue butterflies resting on picturesque flowers. Close inspection, however, reveals that the vibrant colours of the butterflies are fading. There are also translucent butterflies made from plastic hanging near the bottom of the vivid butterflies. These fading and translucent butterflies represent the progressional vanishment of species. Through this piece, I convey how humans overlook the dire situation of the rapidly disappearing environment, resulting in the loss of habitats for species. Humans fail to realize a difference in time between what we do and when we recognize the impacts we have made. I chose to include butterflies because they were once very ubiquitous in the forests nearby my house. These species, however, were appearing less frequently from some point on. Though butterflies may be merely associated with its beauty, it is critical to note their significance as pollinators, providing life to so many plant species. Without butterflies, our planet earth will not be able to hold the diverse beauty we see today. To communicate the need of greener lifestyles, I attempted to express the beauty of recycling through the media I used. Some such media include a pizza box, garden twine, plastic, strings, and wire. I long to echo the beauty of embracing and preserving our natural resources to the viewers who see this.
