We live in a bubble

2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

We live in a bubble. The focus of my art piece is on light pollution. I’ve always found inspiration in the sky, which is why I chose this topic. The stars are so lovely yet they are hidden. We are in this bubble of shiny and bright city lights. When I look up at the sky at home, I can pretty much count every single star in the sky. That’s how bad the light pollution is. I don’t even live in a big city. The lights form a barrier between us and the stars. Our world forms a barrier between us and the earth. I didn’t understand how bad it really was until I looked up when camping in the Tetons, to realize that the sky was filled to the brim with breathtaking lights. They are the most beautiful thing I’ve seen and I didn’t even know they were there. It makes me sad now to look at the sky and know that we are losing so much. I’ve always loved van Gogh’s detailed swirls in his work, which is where I got the inspiration for the stars. He has a quote, “I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.” I also got inspiration from picture book styles. Both of these remind me of where we started and where the world started, simple and beautiful. I hope that those who see this will look up at the stars and see something different, understand what is missing. I hope by showing them something small and easy to dismiss, that they will start to look around and see the other things that have slowly disappeared and feel an urgency to act. Nobody can fix this alone, but if everyone tries, we might have a chance.
