2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

“Rumble in the Jungle” is a commentary on the environmental issues of today, specifically about the deforestation in Indonesia affecting the biodiversity of Indonesia’s ecosystems and the massive emissions produced from the burning and cutting down of the rainforests. The piece has a light-hearted name about a very serious matter. The deforestation, happening to produce lumber or area for palm groves in the production of palm oil, is a pressing concern because it is contributing to the continuing severity of the climate change crisis happening today, which will affect the future generation’s world, my world. I used recycled coffee grounds to create this piece as a way of using compostable and sustainable products that would be thrown away otherwise to give them another purpose and to convey the natural aspect of my message about preserving the nature in the world. I have come to realize that if no one speaks up about what is happening in the world around us that will affect our future lives, then nothing will change. I do not want to live in a world without the beauty of nature. I hope that this piece will help others to see what is happening in our world and encourage them to look for their own ways to help change the devastation towards our environment.
