Division II (Ages 10-13)

“A Choice for Our Future” is about a decision. This decision will determine how humanity will live in the future. Some people believe global warming isn't real or climate change is a myth. What they don’t realize is that not doing anything IS a decision that has serious consequences for our future. The first environmental element represented in my piece is the land. It represents the outcome if we continue to live our lives the way we are now. In this element, our environment has fallen to this level of desperation and struggle. The air is not clean and the water is undrinkable. This is how I envision the future of humanity without a change in our behavior. The other environmental element is the trees. Healthy trees, clean oxygen and wildlife is how I would like to see our future world. We can accomplish this by planting more trees, using battery powered cars, recycling more or preserving natural forests and jungles. Preserving our environment is very important to me because when I think about my goals and dreams about my future and the future of others my age, there are many things I hope I can do. The thing that worries me as I think about that is how I might not be able to based on the condition of our environment. In my artwork I decided to use both oil paint and pencil crayons. I used pencil crayons to express how bland and difficult a life without color would be. I used oil paints to explain how bright a life with a healthy environment is. When people see “A Choice for Our Future” I hope they realize the sad reality that is yet to come if we don’t change our ways of life.
