Division III (Ages 14-18)

My piece is a portrayal of suffocation which is my interpretation of “plant the seed”. The effect of deforestation is a harmful lack of oxygen and a detrimental increase in C02. This is suffocating for our planet, hence my depiction of suffocation. The plastic is a significant element as well, making the symbolism twofold considering how plastic is another major issue with regards to our planet’s health. Although plastic may not relate to “plant the seed” as deeply as deforestation, it definitely has an impact on the wellbeing of our planet and deserves acknowledgement. The women under the plastic represents mankind and life, which continues to increasingly suffocate as deforestation and lack of oxygen becomes a more ignored and increasingly lethal issue. These issues are important to me because the planet is our only home, and if we lose it to preventable issues, there will be no future for mankind. It is also thoroughly important to me because of my aspiration to become a marine biologist, there will be no future for that type of career and the oceans I am so passionate about, if we do not take care of our planet and create sustainable solutions now. I used oil paint to create this portrait. I hope that my piece will install fear in my viewers. Plastic over a woman’s head should feel uncomfortable, and this should push them to want to make a difference. A difference to stop suffocation to the best of their ability.
