Fruit of Planting Seeds: The Future

Division II (Ages 10-13)

In my painting, three children are frolicking in a community garden, depicting the bond between them and the environment formed through planting seeds. In front of the vegetable garden, there is the wrinkled old hand of a grandfather, placing a seed in one of the seed furrows. This hand represents this generation. If we continue to plant seeds, the future generation can enjoy the fruits of our labor. Even one small seed can bring life and joy to everybody. I live in Fairbanks, Alaska, where summers are short and thus precious. Last summer, my family took to gardening and although it was pretty exhausting, our work was worth the time and the effort. I learned the importance of soil, the existence of plants to the environment, and the joy of harvesting! I want others to also experience this joy and connection between their lives and the environment. I used watercolor to provide a free, flowing effect throughout my painting. I utilized darker colors for the front and brighter colors for the back (representing a brighter future). For details, I used brush pens and watercolor pencils. I hope that viewers of my artwork would be encouraged to take action and plant seeds, now.
