Division III (Ages 14-18)

My artwork is set in a dystopian future where the ecosystem is decaying due to the negligence and contamination of human activities. The society in this piece is powered by the large, metal tree shown in the middle of the piece which contains the last remaining seed. In the foreground of this painting, there is a person that is holding a picture of the nature and greenery of the past that no longer exists. All that is left is the last planted seed, which begs the question of how much time is left before this society collapses. This reflects our society today as we are facing many environmental issues, but people choose to turn a blind eye. It shows how our world can end up like the one presented in the painting, or even worse, due to the carelessness of our actions. This environmental issue is important to me because it ultimately affects the whole world. Ecosystems are collapsing and many species are becoming extinct due to the pollution and fossil fuels we generate. Humans are also being affected by the issues that we cause. We are not treating this problem as a dire enough situation, which can cause more obstacles for us in what lies ahead. I hope that by viewing this artwork, people can gain a sense of urgency and find out what they can do to help save the environment and our future.
