Division III (Ages 14-18)

With rising sea levels, temperatures, and carbon emissions, the world is facing challenging times, yet we often forget about the communities and people affected. The work is set in a small town in South Korea; we see a child handed a plant from her father. The work embodies the theme "Plant the Seed" it communicated that educating the future generation about global warming is how humanity can recover from the climate crisis. The seed is knowledge and empathy; planting it in the younger generation will sustain the planet for many more generations and is the only way nature can continue to grow. This environmental issue is important to me because it affects my family in South Korea. My grandfather's lung complications made it dangerous to breathe contaminated air. The demographic where he lived was experiencing high air pollution and greenhouse gases, which confined him indoors. His experience made the effects pollution has on people right now. I used watercolors and soft pastel to create the work. I hope the mixture of vibrant colors and happy faces will empower people to take action and mitigate the effects of climate change and pollution. I want this entry to encourage people to realize the benefits of climate education and empower them to start cultivating the next generation.
