Division III (Ages 14-18)

I wanted my work to convey how one tree, one plant, and one seed can make such a difference in the world around us. The leftmost panel shows how adding community gardens to urban areas can give many people access to healthier food and help clean up air pollution. The middle panel shows how trees make up habitat for different species. Now with much of the world’s forests destroyed due to deforestation, it is even more important to vigorously preserve what we have left. The rightmost panel represents how the variety of plant species in our world support vast food webs. We rely on these plants not only in our own communities but to support our beloved planet’s biodiversity. Each of these thriving solutions started with the planting of a seed. These issues are important to me because they all come from humanity’s ignorance of a certain aspect of the world around us. Too often we take things for granted then learn the truth too late. Instead of being part of this group of people, I want to be part of the proactive group. The group working hard today so that the world we have now can last. My piece was created using acrylic paints and color pencils. I wanted to use bright colors as a symbol of hope for a future that stems from the seeds we plant today. I can see this piece inspiring others to take action in their communities: to get in contact with their local community garden, to participate in replanting projects, and to make contributions to organizations striving to preserve the world’s rich biodiversity.
