2020 - Division III (Grades 9-12)

We’re a lucky group of humans to be able to live on Earth at the same time as the millions-to-trillions other species. We share a home with smart people, smart dolphins, beautiful zebras and polar bears, even though we don’t see them every day. And because some of our household is absent from our daily humdrum, we sometimes neglect to take care of them. I want this piece to convey the parallels between our future youth and the endangered creatures that they may not ever see. It’s a digitally-manipulated color pencil drawing of a drowning stuffed polar bear, wrapped in a tight, heather-mauve rope. Its left side is experiencing a purposeful glitch, as though humans had programmed it to disintegrate in a confusion of our worst existential fears and reality. I hope that the darkly glitch-realistic imagery and the nostalgia from the child’s dress can motivate viewers to relate the care they have for the planet to their care for their own families. I hope we can be willing to limit our consumption of plastic, animal products, paper, and energy, and that we support activists and political groups who want to save our planet and our home.
