2020 - Division II (Grades 4-8)

Artist Statement Sea turtles need freedom because they are getting suffocated , injured or strangled in nets. The environment elements I used is a turtle covered in net and that is connected to the theme Our Earth, Our Home because animals are getting affected by plastic pollution and fishing boats are throwing there nets in the ocean and the waves carry the nets onto the shore and then the animals like sea turtles are trapped in nets. To summarize, turtles are stuck in their own homes. Fighting plastic pollution is very important to me because animals are dying and that affects humans. There is starting to be more plastic than animals and that means animals are dying, that also means humans won’t have any food to eat. In conclusion plastic pollution affects the environment, animals and ultimately affects human beings. The artistic element i used to communicate my message is an actual net to symbolized a turtle trapped in a net.The materials I used are watercolor and watercolor pencil. The colors i used are blue for the ocean and I made a splatter technique. The sand has brown orange and yellow watercolor. The shells are pink blue purple watercolor and i used the watercolor pencil to add small details to the shells. The turtles spots are green and black mixed together. Also, the shell of the turtle used a brown mixed with a little bit of orange. I want the viewers to understand that plastic pollution is a big problem. I also want the viewers to think about what they can do to help stop plastic pollution.
