2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

The hourglass shows how the clock is slowly ticking for our planet. The green-brown colored sludge at the top of the hourglass depicts the pollution given off by factories and human activities seeping into nature. Lush, natural areas are being spoiled with the entrance of pollution. The only way we can avoid this is by flipping the hourglass, or zooming out on our carbon impact and truly understanding and changing how we affect the planet. Climate change has been important to me for years. The first I heard about the devastating effect of human life on our beautiful, natural locations was in elementary school. I remember seeing pictures of an oil spill and the effects it had on ducks in the area, and I was heartbroken. Since that significant moment, I’ve always been keen to learn more about climate change and what I can do to help. I keep the water running as short as possible, I don’t buy things I don’t need to prevent future waste, I turn the lights off, and I recycle and reuse as much as I can. However, it still doesn’t feel like enough. On the individual scale, there are many measures we can take to help save our planet. However, the real problem lies within greedy corporations and industries who care about profit above all else. To demonstrate my message, I used symbolization. It conveys a large, complicated issue in a simple manner. This makes it easy for people of all ages to understand, how the slow dripping of the sand in the hourglass can lead to our eventual demise. With this piece, I hope to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. I want them to feel worried about the time running out, panic inspiring them to do more.
