2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

The elements in this work represent the similarities between a volcano in nature and the human heart or human emotions as we go through our lives. A volcano’s urge to erupt comes abruptly, often leaving citizens, who live around the volcano, little time to evacuate before their homes are destroyed by the hot lava. Though volcanoes can be destructive and devastating to people’s lives in the moment, they leave the earth with new formations, that are often beautiful. This idea is important to me because it serves as a reminder that no matter how hard we try, we cannot always suppress our feelings before they eventually erupt. Letting go of our feelings and emotions and excepting that we cannot always control them can lead to relief in our lives and even something beautiful. I used bright, vivid colors to convey the idea of different emotions the emerge from our heart and contrasted that with the deep, black flocking of the flowers at the bottom. For those who view it, I believe that people will be reminded of the inconsistency, yet beauty of life, leaving them to ponder how little control they have over some areas in their lives.
