2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

With the issue of climate change, it can be predicted that the rising of water levels will be one of the many consequences, portrayed by the Hudson River in this piece. This environmental issue is important to me because the climate has an almost incomprehensible degree of significance in our lives. The posterity of humanity is dependent on our ability to live with nature, not against it. Personally, I would much prefer living in a cleaner, healthier world than a sickly one gradually dragged towards death as mankind slips poison into its system. For my piece, I used dull, muted shades of acrylic paint to portray the aftermath of our current state of affairs. Using a murky surface for the water, I wanted to show what our oceans would look like if we continue oil drilling. However, I also used a wide variety of bright colors for the region with clean water to symbolize the potential for salvation. Furthermore, the Statue of Liberty symbolizes freedom and hope for a better future for many citizens. I wanted to tie this issue to the fact that the country so many people fought to be a part of will no longer be a country worth fighting for if we don’t change our ways. This entry displays the caricature consequences of our reality. On the current path our lives are taking, life on Earth will be sent to an early grave. Despite this, it is not too late to slow the pace of climate change as long as we act today. If we all come together to solve this global issue collectively, we can save our home. I hope that my painting might encourage our society to build a cleaner energy system in which oil takes no part.
