2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

This piece is entitled : Tea Time. It is an attack on the global warming crisis, melting ice caps and water pollution. The tea is to represent the oceans warming. The teapot symbolizes how humans are willingly causing the problem. The teacup and the saucer represent the earth. The tea water is a mix of blues and browns to help viewers better understand that it is tea rather than just water, but also to represent muggy waters from water pollution. There are tiny melting sugar cubes to represent the ice caps melting. The asymmetrical composition is a bigger metaphor of how human destruction has shifted earth's natural balance. In this point of action that the painting is held, the water has already begun to pour over the cup much like how our sea levels are rising and causing issues such as flooding. The problem has already occurred leaving us “no time to waste”. This year I have seen a lot of activism for our planet. I've seen many devastating pictures and videos of how we are destroying our planet and I wanted to contribute to the media to open people's eyes. The polar ice caps are melting 6 times faster than they were in the 1990s. Many animals are becoming endangered due to loss of habitat such as polar bears. Not only are animals affected but so are humans. The idea of human superiority and greed will cause our dreadful demise if we do not make a change to be better. I want the viewer to feel a sense of urgency to change their actions. I hope they notice that something so beautiful can represent something so awful. With a conscious effort and an open mind we can make the earth a better place for both humans and animals to coexist.
