2021 - Division III (Ages 14-18)

My painting embodies the theme of the competition “No Time to Waste’ as it portrays the hope that the creation of green cities all over the world is something achievable. The question is, why is the creation of these cities so important? Urbanization and climate change call for new solutions to improve the quality of life in our cities. Public green space has a positive effect on biodiversity, climate, wellness and air quality. That is why, making cities “green” is a necessary step in preparing for a healthier and more sustainable future. Cities around the world are leading the way and developing innovative plans, such as ordinances, citywide strategies, public outreach and educational campaigns to drive individuals towards climate change and resilience. In my opinion, some important actions that local governments should launch are to ban the most common single-use plastic products, to develop a biodiversity protection strategy as well as a plan for all public transportation, which will run on renewable energy, to adhere to stricter clean water ordinances and to plant lots of trees. If all these procedures are followed, the environment will be successfully supported and protected. All in all, a green city is essential for a climate-proof and sustainable environment. Cities have the potential to change the course of action when it comes to addressing climate change. They also have the most to lose from inaction, since rising sea levels, drought, water scarcity and air pollution are leading to a growing number of unlivable cities. However, cities are also setting the pace when it comes to setting standards for meeting green targets. In my artwork, the city rests on a leaf, where the greenery embraces it, highlighting the fact that we have the ability to take action, which will lead to a better life for all.
