This art piece addresses the affliction of deforestation upon the environment, a topic which is currently of great relevance given the numerous forest endangerment crises being faced around the world. In fact, when I heard news of the Amazon’s rainforest rapid demolition and that only 83% of it remains, I began to realize how serious of an issue deforestation is. Not only does it interfere with the production of the oxygen necessary for us to breathe, but it helps facilitate the endangerment of other plant and animal species as well. It is for these reasons that deforestation is of such great importance to me. In regards to the theme, my piece shows a literal depiction of planting a seed, but it also figuratively represents the shattering of large-scale deforestation’s continuity with the portrayal of broken glass in which demolished trees convey the destructive nature of deforestation. They also lack saturation in color so they appear dull and lifeless, symbolizing the reality that deforestation rids our environment of its life and vibrance. Additionally, to emphasize the contrast between the bleakness of the dead trees and the trees of the flourishing forest, I incorporated hints of orange and purple in their wooden barks, enlivening their color. However, in the picture someone is planting a pine seed-one of the most commonly felled trees for housing-into the ground, destroying the depiction of continuous environmental wreckage and demonstrating how great the impact a small contribution to the environment can have. These illustrations show both the deforestation’s harmful nature and its reversibility. As a result, I believe that, by seeing my artwork, people will see the simplicity of helping the environment and will be encouraged to combat deforestation by taking the first step and planting a seed.
