Division III (Ages 14-18)

In my piece, I depict the scene of a community garden event, celebrating Earth Day. The image is one of both hope and distress, as it shows children, the future of this world planting seedlings together. However, right behind them is smoke coming out of a factory, terrorizing the sky. So I show the children literally planting the seed. In the foreground, there is a magnifying glass, revealing a ladybug on the leaf. This shows how by planting the seed, not only are you supporting the life of the plant, you are supporting the life of an entire ecosystem. The ladybug lives off that plant and other small creatures do as well. Those small creatures also support other larger ones and the process continues. This issue is important to me because I know that our world is still going through an unprecedented change as ocean levels are rising, temperatures are rising, ice caps are melting, and so on. These have and will continue to affect me and my community through the many natural disasters that global warming causes. I want to emphasize the urgency and dire need of planting the seed. I used digital art because I really wanted to make sure that the lady popped out, both in color and size. The special effects of digital art made it easy to create the sparkly texture on the ladybug, which was imperative to the message. Digital art also allowed me to more easily make the thick, smoky clouds that covered the sky, covering Earth Day. This symbolizes how the world is being entrapped by the pollution we produce. I believe that those who see this entry will come to understand the urgent need to do something. The foreboding background contrasted with the serene foreground will help come to that conclusion.
